THE PREDICTION

24-year-old Tomas Martin Etcheverry moved back up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 27th after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Barcelona Open last week, beating Brandon Nakashima and Cam Norrie before a tight straight-sets exit to eventual champion Casper Ruud. The Argentine reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last summer, taking a set from Alexander Zverev before defeat, to prove his credentials on clay but last week’s run was his first wholly convincing spell on the surface in 2024.

Former number 10 Denis Shapovalov’s mammoth serve got the job done against up-and-coming Facundo Diaz Acosta on Wednesday, just edging through in three sets, but the Canadian should find this next Argentine a tougher challenge. Shapovalov is currently languishing at world number 136 after a few seasons of woeful form and injury setbacks but his best level would still see him comfortably inside the top 20. Back Etcheverry to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance as we gauge his level here in Madrid.

TIP: TOMAS MARTIN ETCHEVERRY TO WIN A SET
