TOMAS MARTIN ETCHEVERRY VS CASPER RUUD PREDICTION

World number seven Casper Ruud has finished runner-up at Roland-Garros in each of the last two finals, to Rafael Nadal in 2022 and to Novak Djokovic last summer, but he very nearly crashed out to a stern test by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina on Thursday. The 25-year-old has won more matches on tour than anyone else thus season, picking up a 12th ATP title at the Geneva Open last weekend, but he may rue that packed schedule after a gruelling second round clash as he faces tireless clay specialist Tomas Martin Etcheverry next.

World number 29 Etcheverry enjoyed a career-best run to the quarter-finals here last summer, before a four-set exit to Alexander Zverev, and he finished runner-up in Lyon last week to bring some momentum of his own into Paris. The Argentine has twice come back from sets down to edge into the third round but he will be a positive force in this third encounter with Ruud, knowing that his best chance of victory is stretching the match out as far as he can.

Ruud has won each of their two previous encounters, including en-route to the Barcelona Open title in April, but expect sets to go both ways in a battle that should at least reach the three-hour mark. Back Ruud to find a way through eventually.
