TOMAS MACHAC VS DANIIL MEDVEDEV PREDICTION

World number five Daniil Medvedev spent longer on court without winning a Grand Slam than anyone else in history when he lost to Jannik Sinner from two sets up at the Australian Open, his fourth five-setter of the campaign in January.

The 28-year-old was due a break, then, here in Paris and he was handed one by Miomir Kecmanovic, who was forced to retire injured in their second set on Thursday. Medvedev has looked in decent shape since an injury of his own forced him to retire against Jiri Lehecka in the quarter-finals of the Madrid Open in April but he faces another rising Czech here in Tomas Machac, who will be well aware of his opponent’s dislike for clay.

23-year-old Machac will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 33rd after overcoming Mariano Navone in five gruelling sets on Thursday, backing up an excellent opener over Nuno Borges, and it would be a surprise if he didn’t feel any fatigue in this third round clash after finishing runner-up to Casper Ruud in Geneva last weekend.

A three-set upset of an admittedly out of sorts Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals there boosts confidence, and proves his credentials in these conditions, but a better-rested Medvedev should be able to find a way through a likely marathon.
