THE PREDICTION

World number 44 Arthur Fils suffered a shock defeat to 17-year-old Joao Fonseca last week in Rio, taking just four games from the wildcard, to start the ball rolling for a week full of upsets. The Frenchman is only young himself at 19 but he won his maiden ATP title on clay last spring in Lyon and more was expected from him on this South American swing, with a three-match losing streak suggesting there is real opportunity for his opponent here. 23-year-old Thiago Seyboth Wild will break inside the top 70 for the first time after backing-up his strong run to the quarter-finals in Rio last week with a solid opener against Roman Burruchaga on Tuesday. The 23-year-old is a former junior star looking to finally realise some of his potential, particularly on clay, and he will be eager to emulate his compatriot’s upset against Fils in this first encounter. Third seed Fils could have done without the bye to the round of 16 here and with confidence low it looks wise to back Seyboth Wild to win at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
