World number 81 Taylor Townsend enjoyed a second wind as the lucky loser replacing Marketa Vondrousova on Tuesday, putting her defeat to Claire Liu behind her with an impressive straight-sets victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The 27-year-old returned to full tour life last summer after struggling to stay on it in recent years and it will be fascinating to see what she can do with some tentative fitness. World number 41 Marta Kostyuk won her maiden WTA title last March at the Austin Open but she struggled to build on that early promise. The 21-year-old still has plenty of room to improve on her clear potential but she should be targeting a move inside the top 30 this season at least. A straight-sets victory over Anhelina Kalinina was a solid start to her Adelaide campaign but this looks a tougher test against Townsend, who has nothing to lose on this free hit of a campaign. Back Townsend to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
