World number four Elena Rybakina survived an early scare at the Miami Open with a comeback over qualifier Clara Tauson, a young player with huge potential, on Thursday. The 24-year-old has struggled to find anything like her best level since blasting Aryna Sabalenka away in the Brisbane International final back in January but she reached the Qatar Masters final before a straight-sets exit to world number one Iga Swiatek to prove her coasting level is still higher than most. This could be another tricky fixture with world number 72 Taylor Townsend, who stunned 25th seed Elise Mertens with just four games conceded to build on an impressive run from qualifying. The 27-year-old has always been capable of tennis far better than her current ranking suggests, and snatching a set here would not be out of the question with the Miami crowd behind her, but backing Rybakina to improve on her opener remains the reasonable call. Take the Kazakh to win in straight sets.
