THE PREDICTION

This is the fourth time world number 10 Taylor Fritz and number 30 Denis Shapovalov have been drawn together since October last year, with Fritz leading the Canadian 2-1 after a straight-sets victory at the Mexican Open earlier this month. Shapovalov leads their already storied overall head-to-head record 5-3 after winning each of their first three matches but they have zig-zagged over the last six meetings to suggest it is Shapovalov’s turn to win this encounter. Patterns aside, though, 25-year-old Fritz looks the favourite to come through a likely three-setter after a commanding victory over Emilio Nava on Friday in a great reaction to his defeat to Jannik Sinner at Indian Wells last Thursday. Shapovalov can often start a tournament slowly but he did well to come back from a dropped set against Guido Pella on Friday despite 13 double faults. Back Fritz to win outright here with home advantage behind him and with his opponent struggling to find any consistency in 2023.
