36-year-old Tatjana Maria brought a career-high WTA world ranking of 42nd into the Hobart International as she continues to enjoy some renaissance form in the twilight of her playing years. The German was in control of her match against Nadia Podoroska on Tuesday before her opponent was forced to retire injured but she will face an arguably tougher test here against lucky loser Viktoriya Tomova, who made full use of her second chance to stun Martina Trevisan in two. 28-year-old Tomova is only six places behind her own career-high of 71st after ending last season with some strong work on the ITF circuit and that form should be taken into account here in a very tough first meeting to call. Back Maria to earn at least a set as the likelier of the two to find a way through but definitely leave this match out of an accumulator.
