Both Tatjana Maria and Jasmine Paolini could set new career-high WTA world rankings after winning their first round matches, with Maria one win away from an incredible feat of breaking the top 40 for the first time at 36 years young. The German overcame Camila Osorio in three very tight sets on Monday but two days’ rest should see her recovered in time for an even tougher clash with Paolini, who moved up to 27th in the live rankings after a straight-sets victory over up-and-comer Diana Shnaider. Maria beat the Italian in straight sets at Indian Wells last March in their only previous tour-level encounter but Paolini has vastly improved her results over the last nine or so months to look the favourite in this rematch. Back Paolini to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
