30-year-old Taro Daniel put in some serious work off the tour last November, bringing his rank up to 74th this week after reaching back-to-back Challenger finals. The Japanese is capable of top 40 tennis at his best but a limp defeat to Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round of the Hong Kong Open last week is symptomatic of his inconsistency, with a straight-sets win over Aleksandar Vukic on Sunday here in Auckland a solid start. World number 45 Max Purcell beat home hopeful Kiranpal Pannu in straight sets on Monday to build on his three-set defeat to world number eight Holger Rune in Brisbane last week. The 25-year-old enjoyed the form of his career last year, also making great strides on the Challenger circuit, and it will be interesting to see if he how he fares in Melbourne next week in singles and doubles. A first meeting between two quality hitters is a tough call but back Purcell to earn at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through.
