THE PREDICTION

World number eight Stefanos Tsitsipas conceded just three games to Alex de Minaur to look fully dialled-in to what is now an enormous opportunity to win the Italian Open for the first time. Defending champion Daniil Medvedev crashed out of the draw on Tuesday to see each of the top four players in the world absent in Rome, paving the way for the likes of Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Taylor Fritz to stake a claim.

25-year-old Tsitsipas found a rare purple patch of form to win his third Monte-Carlo title last month but he endured a rather lacklustre spell in Spain, losing to Casper Ruud in the Barcelona Open final, whom he had beaten comfortably to the Monte-Carlo title, before a shock exit to Thiago Monteiro in Madrid. A comeback over Munich champion Jan-Lennard Struff here in the second round seems to have helped the Greek back on the horse but his next opponent holds a very interesting 3-2 in their head-to-head to suggest this will be a huge test.

World number 24 Nicolas Jarry met Tsitsipas four times last season, his best yet on tour, and he beat the Greek twice at the Halle Open on grass and later in Beijing, their most recent clash. The Chilean also won their first encounter at ‘s-Hertogenbosch on grass but Tsitsipas beat him in straight sets in Monte-Carlos last spring to claim their only clash on clay.

28-year-old Jarry beat Alexandre Muller in straight sets on Tuesday for a no-nonsense improvement on his choppier clash with Stefano Napolitano but Tsitsipas has the higher ceiling in these conditions. This is certainly the Greek’s match to lose but his fluctuating form in recent seasons makes backing him with confidence very difficult. Take Tsitsipas to earn at least a set, as he has in four of their five encounters, to leave this tough one up to chance.

TIP: STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TO WIN A SET
