THE PREDICTION

We can only hope that this Barcelona Open final is more of a contest than last week’s clash between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud in Monte-Carlo, where Ruud had stunned Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals before struggling to find his game in a straight-sets hammering by the Greek. World number seven Tsitsipas has looked totally rejuvenated back on his favoured clay after a tough past two seasons, beating Ruud to claim his third Monte-Carlo Masters crown, but he has been made to work hard for his last two wins in Barcelona, twice coming back from sets down to beat Facundo Diaz Acosta and an inspired Dusan Lajovic.

World number six Ruud is yet to drop a set this week after an impressive victory over Tomas Martin Etcheverry on Saturday but he has lost each of his three finals reached already this season and his failure to defend the Estoril title two weeks ago can be added to that concerning mix. Ruud has never won a title higher-ranked than an ATP 250 and last week’s defeat to Tsitsipas in Monte-Carlo gave him a negative 10-11 record in finals overall after being so consistent on clay a few seasons ago. The Norwegian should have plenty more energy in the tank this week after coasting through the draw but back Tsitsipas, on a 10-match winning streak, to edge through to the title.

TIP: STEFANOS TSITSIPAS TO WIN
