29-year-old Stefano Napolitano will be pleased not to have to face fellow Italian Matteo Berrettini on Thursday, with the former number six withdrawing from Rome at last minute, as he will receive full attention from home fans here against lucky loser J.J. Wolf. Napolitano brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 125th into Rome on a wildcard well-earned after recent victories at events in Madrid and Bengaluru but this will be tough task against the second wind momentum of a lucky loser. World number 101 Wolf has won just one tour-level match this season as his poor form from 2023 continues with little sign of slowing. The 25-year-old hit a real purple patch on the late hardcourt swing of 2022 but he has shown little fervour for clay off the tour in recent weeks to suggest home advantage can swing this for his Italian opponent.
