THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Tomas Machac looks like a player destined for the top 40 this season after some excellent results in recent months. The world number 63 stunned Frances Tiafoe en-route to the third round of the Australian Open in January and it took Hubert Hurkacz to oust him from a strong run at the Marseille Open last month with all the tools to excel in hardcourt conditions.
Former number three Stan Wawrinka brings a 1-4 record into Indian Wells after a tough start to what could well be his last season on tour. The 38-year-old impressed across 2023 with some dogged displays as he desperately seeks that one more title since returning from injury but a three-set defeat to Alexei Popyrin at the Umag Open was a hard one to get over. Machac beat Wawrinka in straight sets at the Stockholm Open last October to suggest the young Czech is the favourite here but three sets seem likelier than two. Back Machac to edge this one outright.
TIP: TOMAS MACHAC TO WIN
