THE PREDICTION

Two former world number threes, some of a handful of players to have won Grand Slams outside of the Big Three over the past 20 years, face off here in what could be a thriller as easily as a damp squib. World number 108 Dominic Thiem and number 51 Stan Wawrinka both enjoy huge home-from-home support in Paris as popular combatants at Roland-Garros, especially Wawrinka after his victory here in 2015, but the two come into Paris-Bercy with little recent form and plenty of fatigue issues. 38-year-old Wawrinka reached his first tour final since 2019 at the Umag Open back in July but he looked to put most of his remaining energy for 2023 into a battle with Alexei Popyrin, who edged him out from a set down. It was a similar story for Thiem at Kitzbuhel in his first final since winning the US Open in 2020, although his drab loss to Sebastian Baez that day looked a hangover from a gruelling week on home clay.

Both players bring two-match losing streaks into this heavyweight clash but Thiem has at least built some confidence in qualifying this weekend, beating Lorenzo Sonego and Christopher O’Connell. Back Thiem to earn at least a set, given his better preparation, to leave the victor up to chance.

BETTING TIP: Dominic Thiem to win a set.
