THE PREDICTION

Former world number seven Danielle Collins conceded just three games to Elina Avanesyan on Sunday to continue her promising assault on the Miami Open. The 30-year-old will be backed to the hilt here as a Florida native, particularly as this will be her last outing in Miami as a tennis professional after announcing that she will retire at the end of the season. The American has enjoyed some excellent form since setting that fateful date, perhaps to bolster her notorious resolve, but this is a tough draw against world number 24 Sorana Cirstea.

33-year-old Cirstea reached the semi-finals here last season to come agonisingly close to breaking inside the top 20 for the first time but she has looked in great shape so far this campaign, blasting past Sloane Stephens before an impressive straight-sets result over Daria Kasatkina on Sunday. It took eventual champion Petra Kvitova to oust the Romanian here 12 months ago but Collins’ will throw everything she has at this match, likely favouring blood, sweat and tears here over fitness on the incoming clay. Back Collins to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable quarter-finalists.

TIP: DANIELLE COLLINS TO WIN A SET
