THE PREDICTION

World number two Aryna Sabalenka has quietly gone about an excellent run at the Miami Open whilst drama and shocks take place elsewhere. The 24-year-old has lost just twice this season, to Elena Rybakina in the final of Indian Wells earlier this month and to Barbora Krejcikova at the Dubai Masters, and she re-asserted dominance over the latter of those by beating the Czech in straight sets on Monday. What is most daunting for incoming opponents is that Sabalenka has successfully protected her serve in back-to-back matches now in Miami, suggesting it will take someone at the very top of their game to topple her. Former world number 21 Sorana Cirstea is certainly enjoying another dip into her renaissance period this month with three remarkable wins this fortnight over Caroline Garcia, Karolina Muchova and Marketa Vondrousova but it would be perhaps the best result of her long career if she could topple the Australian Open champion here.

The pair have never met before on tour and that makes this tougher for the Romanian but Cirstea has played well enough to warrant caution. Back Sabalenka to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets otherwise.
