Former world number four Sofia Kenin finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros in 2020, proving her ability on clay the same year she claimed her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, but she is far from the player who achieved those things four years on. The 25-year-old, currently ranked world number 58 after a brief flurry of form late last season, has lost each of her last seven matches on tour to look all at sea once again but she did at least win the Women’s Doubles title at the Miami Open alongside Bethanie Mattek-Sands. World number 48 Lucia Bronzetti is at her best on clay but she comes in a little cold on the surface, beating Varvara Gracheva in straight sets at this stage of Madrid two weeks ago before losing similarly to Elena Rybakina. The Italian, also 25, has been given a huge boost by the tournament organisers with a debut on Centre Court on Wednesday and home advantage should see her through this tricky opener.
