Former world number three Sloane Stephens grabbed an excellent opening win over Angelique Kerber on Wednesday, her 31st birthday, ousting the former number one in straight sets to delight a partisan crowd in her native Florida. The American is one of the streakier players on tour but also one of the most talented on her day and it should take a top player to oust her in these conditions if she can maintain her current level.
World number 24 Sorana Cirstea beat Stephens in straight sets at the Qatar Masters last month before an excellent run to the semi-finals at the Dubai Masters, where she lost in straight sets to eventual champion Jasmine Paolini. The 33-year-old reached the last four here last season with some remarkable wins over Caroline Garcia, Karolina Muchova, Marketa Vondrousova and Aryna Sabalenka before once again losing to the eventual champion, Petra Kvitova. Stephens avenged her Doha defeat to Cirstea at this stage of Indian Wells two weeks ago to level their tight head-to-head at 2-2, suggesting that she may just have the edge on this occasion with the Show Court Arena firmly behind her. Back Stephens to win outright but leave this tough call out of an accumulator.
