THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Daria Kasatkina did well to overcome a tough foe in Peyton Stearns on Tuesday, needing three sets to oust the up-and-coming American. The 26-year-old finished runner-up to Jelena Ostapenko at the Adelaide 500 last weekend but she rode her luck twice to make that final, with walkovers in the quarter and semi-finals. Former world number three Sloane Stephens conceded just four games to Olivia Gadecki on Tuesday to avoid any stress in her Melbourne opener. The 30-year-old won her Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2017 but she has been perhaps the streakiest player on tour since 2018, capable of any score line at all with one of the highest ceilings and lowest floors of anyone.

Kasatkina’s uber-consistent game would suit an in-form Stephens but frustrate the American on a bad day. Stephens leads their head-to-head 3-1 but Kasatkina won their only hardcourt match at Indian Wells way back in 2018. Back the Russian to take a set to leave the victor up to chance.
