THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Simona Halep conceded just two games to Donna Vekic on Monday for a statement victory in Toronto. The 30-year-old had to retire from her round of 16 match at the Citi Open last week but that now looks a precaution well taken, considering she is in form enough to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon last month before losing to the eventual champion Elena Rybakina. World number 45 Shuai Zhang made short work of Cristina Bucsa on Tuesday but the 33-year-old looks up against it here. The Chinese star has been enjoying an excellent 2022, with a third WTA title won in Lyon back in February, but her uber-consistent ball is unlikely to catch out Halep’s world-class defence as much as most. Halep leads this head-to-head 3-2 after a straight-sets victory at the Madrid Open in April and taking the Romanian to win outright seems a sensible move here, with straight-sets a fair risk.
