THE PREDICTION

Former world number four Caroline Garcia is riding a seven-match winning streak after a vintage display in a straight-sets victory over 10th seed Emma Raducanu on Centre Court. The 28-year-old won the Bad Homburg Open last week for an eighth career WTA title, a second on grass, with a comeback victory over Bianca Andreescu making it two victories over US Open champions in the space of five days. Garcia’s inconsistent brilliance will come up against a totally different prospect in the third round as she faces a baseline brick wall in Shuai Zhang. The 33-year-old Chinese star is exactly the kind of player that could frustrate the Garcia’s mercurial talent into defeat here and she has been in sparkling form this month, with injury keeping her from contesting the Singles and Doubles finals at the Birmingham Classic two weeks ago.

Zhang leads Garcia 2-1 in their head-to-head, winning their two most recent meetings at Wimbledon in 2019 and earlier this season on her way to the Lyon Open title. As much as Garcia was a tough match-up for Raducanu, Shuai Zhang will be a constant nuisance to the Frenchwoman. In the likelihood that this match sees three sets the shrewd move could be taking Shuai Zhang, yet to drop a set this week, to win at least one.
