THE PREDICTION

20-year-old Amanda Anisimova is one win away from matching her career-high WTA world ranking of 21st she first set back in 2019 after bursting on to the scene with a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros. The American struggled through the next two seasons but a second WTA title claimed right at the start of 2022 signalled a return to form that she has lived up to in spades since, with runs to the second week of all three Grand Slams so far suggesting plenty of promise for the US Open. Anisimova came back from a set down to beat Karolina Pliskova for a first time on Thursday and she will have to repeat the feat against world number 45 Shelby Rogers here as the 29-year-old leads their head-to-head record 2-0. Rogers is a world-beater on her day and she has so far blasted past two serious opponents in Bianca Andreescu and Maria Sakkari to reach the quarter-finals. Predicting what the elder American is going to do on any given day is near impossible but Anisimova’s form is a more trackable rise towards a rightful place inside the top 10. Back the younger American to win at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners, with both of their matches so far seeing a decider.
