THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Taylor Fritz avoided a serious banana skin on Friday with a straight-sets victory over Luciano Darderi, bouncing back well from his defeat to Jan-Lennard Struff in the Munich final last Sunday. The 26-year-old is an excellent all-court threat at his best but he has been struggling to find his best level for some time, with recent early exits in Miami and Monte-Carlo out of character for the once dependable high performer.

World number 19 Sebastian Baez is more of a streaky player, with back-to-back ATP titles claimed last summer at Kitzbuhel and Winston-Salem emulated this February at Rio and Chile to bring his impressive career tally to six trophies already at just 23 years old. The Argentine snapped a four-match losing streak in a confidence-boosting three-set scrap over Luca Van Assche but the first of those four losses came at the hands of Fritz, who very convincingly leads their head-to-head 4-0. A first meeting on Baez’ favoured clay should level things a little but Fritz is no pushover in these conditions. Back the American to find a way through.
