THE PREDICTION

Former number 21 Amanda Anisimova reached the quarter-finals here two years ago, losing to Aryna Sabalenka in three tight sets, and she has never lost at the first opportunity in Rome. The American is currently ranked 237th after taking the majority of last season on hiatus away from tennis but she has impressed in spells since her comeback, taking Jessica Pegula to three sets before defeat in Charleston this time last month. Anisimova reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2019 to further prove her credentials in these conditions but former number five Sara Errani went one better in 2012, finishing runner-up to Maria Sharapova. 37-year-old Errani also finished runner-up here on home clay in Rome, to Serena Williams in 2014, before falling away from the peak of her powers after a fourth-successive quarter-final in Paris a year later.

The Italian has enjoyed a brilliant renaissance period so far this year, reaching the semi-finals in Bogota this time last month and upsetting old foe Caroline Wozniacki in three sets at this stage of Madrid two weeks ago, but Anisimova should be too good to fall here despite all of Rome wishing it. Errani appears to be throwing everything into what could well be her last summer on tour but back Anisimova to reach the second round.

TIP: AMANDA ANISIMOVA TO WIN
