18-year-old Sara Bejlek will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 110th after easing past fellow youngster Ashlyn Krueger on Sunday, fabulously reaching the round of 16 here in Madrid on her Masters debut. A straight-sets upset of Dubai runner-up Anna Kalinskaya in the second round is the Czech’s most impressive of five wins on the spin from qualifying but she also came back from a set down to stun Anna Blinkova in the first, one of only three players to have beaten Elena Rybakina this year. World number four Rybakina beat number one Iga Swiatek en-route to the Stuttgart Open title two weeks ago, already her third WTA title of 2024, and she has looked rock solid so far in Madrid to suggest this is the end of Bejlek’s fine run. Back the Kazakh to make it seven wins on the spin in straight sets here as she gears up to defend her title in Rome.
