18-year-old Sara Bejlek could set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 127th after coming back from a set down to upset Anna Blinkova on Wednesday, claiming her first Masters-level win on tour. The Czech qualified well this week to earn her place the hard way in Madrid, backing-up an excellent qualifying campaign to make her Australian Open debut in January, but this looks too steep of a task against one of 2024’s form players.
World number 25 Anna Kalinskaya reached the quarter-finals in Melbourne to prove herself a serious rising star on tour and she backed that up with a brilliant campaign at the Dubai Masters, just falling short in the final against Jasmine Paolini despite upsetting world number one Iga Swiatek and number three Coco Gauff. The Russian has struggled to match that intensity since, with injury seeing her withdraw from Miami after a strong run to the last 16, but she should have more than enough to avoid an upset in this first encounter.
