THE PREDICTION

24-year0old Thiago Seyboth Wild brings a career-high ATP world ranking of 63rd into the Madrid Masters after an excellent March saw back-to-back third round exits at this level, stunning Karen Khachanov and Taylor Fritz at Indian Wells and in Miami, respectively. The Brazilian enjoyed a decent run to the quarter-finals of the Rio Open in February but he has plenty to prove on his favoured clay after last summer’s remarkable upset of Daniil Medvedev at Roland-Garros, with last week’s early exit in Bucharest avoidable.

World number 42 Roman Safiullin beat Seyboth Wild in straight sets at the Stockholm Open late last season but clay should level the playing field in this second meeting between the two. 26-year-old Safiullin brings a 1-2 record on clay into Madrid but his two recent defeats have come at the hands of top quality opposition in Novak Djokovic and Roberto Bautista Agut. Seyboth Wild has earned at least a set in each of his last five matches and backing him to maintain that here looks the sensible way to lean in lieu of a result.

TIP: THIAGO SEYBOTH WILD TO WIN A SET
