26-year-old Roman Safiullin will break his career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd set at Wimbledon this summer if he reaches a first tour final on Tuesday and he looks well capable of doing so after making the last four without dropping a set. The Russian was a junior star touted for big things but he suffered more than most when the pandemic halted his progression, with his run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in July well overdue. World number 18 Lorenzo Musetti beat Arthur Rinderknech in straight sets to finally put in an assured performance after struggling in recent months but despite his ranking he looks the slight underdog in hardcourt conditions against Safiullin’s momentum. The Italian is well capable of a lights-out performance with boosted confidence but Safiullin is a win away from a personal milestone he has been desperate to reach for so long.
