THE PREDICTION
World number 45 Dan Evans found some of the best tennis of his career on a US hardcourt last summer, stunning the field to win the Washington Open. The 33-year-old was in excellent shape until an unfortunate muscle injury curtailed his season in October but last week’s three-set exit to Ben Shelton at the Mexican Open suggests he will be competitive over the coming weeks. Evans beat world number 41 Roman Safiullin in straight sets just two weeks ago at the Los Cabos Open but the Russian should be able to produce better in this rematch. 26-year-old Safiullin won their first tour-level encounter en-route to the Chengdu Open final last September but he has seemingly struggled for confidence since a semi-final exit to Holger Rune at the Brisbane 500 in January, with a five-match losing streak coming into Indian Wells suggesting Evans is the slight favourite. Back the Brit to win at least a set with three about as likely as two.
TIP: DAN EVANS TO WIN A SET
