THE PREDICTION

World number 18 Karen Khachanov received a bye to the round of 16 this week as the third seed in Marseille and he should be a factor in the latter stages if he can find the level that brought him to this stage of the Australian Open last month, where he was beaten in straight sets by eventual champion Jannik Sinner. That defeat has certainly improved with age but his opening early exit at the Hong Kong Open this time last month was a cause for concern, although he only recently added a fifth career ATP title at the Zhuhai Championships to snap a five-year wait for silverware.

Former number nine Roberto Bautista Agut leads their head-to-head record 6-3 but practically all of their encounters over the years have come incredibly close, including a win for Khachanov in their most recent meeting in Madrid last April. Six of their nine matches have seen sets go both ways but it is notable that RBA leads their hardcourt record 4-0 as things stand. The 35-year-old has dropped outside the top 100 after a poor 12 months on tour but he should be able to battle his way back to the top 40 at least this year, with a straight-sets victory over Richard Gasquet on Monday an encouraging start in Marseille. Consider taking Khachanov to win in three sets here but the suitably cautious call is backing the Russian to win at least one.

TIP: KAREN KHACHANOV TO WIN 2-1
