THE LOWDOWN
LAZIO
In March, Lazio parted company with Maurizio Sarri and eventually replaced him with former Hellas Verona and Olympique de Marseille boss Igor Tudor. The Croat plays an attractive and front foot style of football but, for the time being, has worked on being effective with Lazio most definitely enjoying improved results since his appointment.
The capital city club come into this one on the back of a 2-2 draw with Monza last weekend. Ciro Immobile gave Lazio an early lead before Milan Djuric equalised late on. Matias Vecino had seemingly given Lazio a 2-1 win, though, before Djuric completed his brace in second-half stoppage-time.
EMPOLI
It has been a fairly bizarre season for Empoli this year with the Florence-based club seeming destined for relegation after the failed stints of both Paolo Zanetti and Aurelio Andreazzoli. Serie A’s ‘miracle worker’ Davide Nicola, who oversaw great escapes with both Crotone and Salernitana, could make it a hat-trick after working his magic.
They come into this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting just outside of the bottom three and the relegation places. Their most recent outing saw them hold relegation rivals Frosinone to a goalless draw at home. That means they managed five victories with four draws in Nicola’s 15 matches in charge.
THE TEAM NEWS
LAZIO
There is only one key injury concern for Igor Tudor and Lazio this weekend for the visit of Empoli as defender Mario Gila remains unavailable.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Mandas; Patric, Romagnoli, Hysaj; Marusic, Guendouzi, Kamada, Zaccagni; Anderson, Luis Alberto; Immobile
UNAVAILABLE: Gila (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE:
EMPOLI
Gabriele Guarino is a doubt for this weekend’s trip to the capital, whilst Sebastian Walukiewicz, Alberto Cerri and Tyronne Ebuehi are all out injured, too.
PREDICTED XI (3-4-2-1): Caprile; Bereszynski, Ismajli, Luperto; Gyasi, Grassi, Marin, Pezzella; Fazzini, Cambiaghi; Niang
UNAVAILABLE: Walukiewicz (Injured), Cerri (Injured), Ebuehi (Injured)
QUESTIONABLE: Guarino (Injured)
THE PREDICTION
Despite Igor Tudor being a generally front foot and attacking coach, Lazio have been fairly reactive and pragmatic since his appointment. They have been much-improved in terms of their effectiveness, though. Empoli’s improvement under Davide Nicola has also been built upon a strong defensive foundation, too, so whilst Lazio are favourite with their home advantage, it is expected to be a low-scoring encounter for this one in the capital.
