THE PREDICTION

World number 52 Lorenzo Sonego is a hugely frustrating player to follow on the ATP tour these days, capable of finding some near-unplayable tennis in brief moments but falling far too easily on a number of occasions. The 28-year-old lost in the Monte-Carlo qualifying last time out but then almost reached the quarter-finals as a lucky loser, upsetting Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets before a three-set exit to Ugo Humbert, and it took eventual champion Matteo Berrettini to oust him in the last eight of the Marrakech Open before that.

Former number seven Richard Gasquet remains a silky talent on clay and he looks a serious threat to Sonego after gliding through his two qualifying matches this week. The 37-year-old, similarly to Sonego’s last campaign, made the quarter-finals of the Estoril Open as a lucky loser there, upsetting an ailing Dominic Thiem in straight sets, but 2024 is beginning to look like his last as a professional. The pair share a 1-1 head-to-head but they have not played since 2018. Take Sonego to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of the two to edge through.

TIP: LORENZO SONEGO TO WIN A SET
