World number 14 Denis Shapovalov is through to a fourth quarter-final of the season after beating Taro Daniel in straight sets on Wednesday. The Canadian started 2022 as part of a title-winning Team Canada at the ATP Cup before taking that form into the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where he lost to eventual champion Rafael Nadal in five gruelling sets. Shapovalov is desperately difficult to predict on any given day but he is likely to come through this relatively winnable fixture against world number 99 Ricardas Berankis. The Lithuanian has found some solid form of late, with an impressive run to the semi-finals of the Kremlin Cup late last year especially impressive, but despite taking out big-serving Alexei Popyrin on Wednesday he is likely to be overpowered by the sixth seed here. Shapovalov leads this head-to-head record 2-1 with two straight-set wins on their hardcourt meetings and that outcome seems a reasonable conclusion here.
