Sho Shimabukuro is not in strong form as he begins his campaign in Hangzhou. The Japanese player was last in action at the US Open, where he took the opening set against Arthur Rinderknech before losing 6-7 (4) 6-2 7-6 (4) 6-2. That followed straight sets defeats to Miomir Kecmanovic in Winston Salem and Hubert Hurkacz in Cincinnati. Nevertheless, Shimabukuro has climbed to a career high of 93 in the rankings this season.

Hugo Gaston’s most recent match was also at Flushing Meadows, where he lost to former world number one Daniil Medvedev in the first-round. The Frenchman was largely uncompetitive, losing 6-4 6-2 6-4.
