Dane Sweeny returns to action after producing the best Grand Slam run of his career at the US Open. The Australian beat Corentin Moutet before producing a major upset against Lorenzo Musetti, recovering from a set down to beat the number 13 seed 3-6 6-1 6-2 6-2. His run ended against another Italian, Luciano Darderi. He also won his maiden Challenger title in Brisbane earlier in the season, beating Tristan Schoolkate in the final.

Taro Daniel is his first-round opponent. He has come through qualifying without dropping a set. The Japanese player opened with a 6-3 6-4 win over Jake Delaney and backed that up with a win over Hayato Matsuoka. His best result of the season was winning the Bratislava Challenger. However, his ranking has fallen to 193 in the world, and he failed to reach the US Open main draw after losing to Andrew Johnson in the opening stage of qualifying.

Sweeny leads the head-to-head 2-1 and won their most recent meeting in Brisbane. His current level is difficult to overlook.
