THE PREDICTION
World number 140 Rebecca Peterson has stunned the field at the Merida Open this week, blowing off the cobwebs on her career in recent seasons with victories over Alycia Parks, top seed Magda Linette and most recently Caty McNally in three sets on Saturday. The 27-year-old has never lost a WTA tour final but she won both of her titles in the space of a month in Nanchang and Tianjin back in 2019. World number 68 Camila Giorgi is far better than her current ranking suggests and she proved it several times overs this week, reaching the Merida Open final without dropping a set and knocking out defending champion Sloane Stephens without dropping a game, The Italian is the clear favourite here but Peterson should not be underestimated after so long in the wilderness. Giorgi leads their head-to-head record 2-1, with Peterson’s victory coming via an injury to the Italian in 2019 not long before the Swede won her two WTA titles. Back Giorgi to win outright but leave this one out of any promising accumulators.
