THE PREDICTION

World number 15 Qinwen Zheng avoided a real upset on Tuesday, coming back from a set down to Ashlyn Krueger, but she should be better for an early scare as one of a few genuine dark horses for the last eight at least. The 21-year-old enjoyed an incredible second-half to last season with her first two WTA titles picked up at the Palermo Ladies Open and Zhengzhou Open complementing her Gold Medal at the Asian Games but her crowning achievement was a remarkable run to the quarter-finals at the US Open.

World number 54 Katie Boulter looked in good shape in a tough straight-sets opener over Yue Yuan on Tuesday, surviving a wobble on match points with a serious surge in the second-set tiebreak. The 27-year-old also claimed her maiden WTA title at the Nottingham Open on grass last summer but she has a powerful game for hardcourts too to look a creditable threat to Zheng’s campaign. The Chinese should be taking this first encounter in straight sets at her best but with Boulter in the better moment back Zheng to edge this outright.
