Saving a near-miracle victory by Angelique Kerber over world number one Iga Swiatek, there is a reasonable chance that this mouth-watering doubles decider is required in the United Cup Final. World number seven Alexander Zverev has laboured his way through to the final with eight gruelling matches played this week, singles and doubles, but he leads Hubert Hurkacz 2-0 in their head-to-head record to suggest he can pull Germany back level 1-1 to set up this decider. Of course, it is worth waiting for both singles results to come in before tackling this fixture but assuming the tie is level we should see a proper showdown between Poland’s unbeaten pair, Swiatek and Hurkacz, and Germany’s unbeaten partnership of Alexander Zverev and Laura Siegemund (with Germany’s doubles defeat to France in the group stages coming against Zverev and Kerber).
There is little doubt that Zverev would find the energy to play another decider if required, despite his herculean efforts this week, and the momentum from beating top Aussie pair Storm Hunter and Matthew Ebden should count for something here. However, Swiatek and Hurkacz have been able to rest since the end of the group stages after sealing their quarter-final and semi-final 2-0 in the singles and they conceded just seven games in the group stages after handing Spain a double bagel. World number one Iga Swiatek should prove the difference in this match-up, with Poland able to field two players who can deal with Zverev’s power on either wing, so back her to lead her nation to a historic trophy on Sunday.
