THE PREDICTION
World number two Aryna Sabalenka successfully defended her Australian Open title in January to prove, to herself more than anybody, that her first Grand Slam title the year before was no fluke. The 25-year-old came back fabulously from a poor 2022 season in which she developed the yips on her world class serve, becoming pound-for-pound the most effective hardcourt player on the WTA tour. A shock defeat to Donna Vekic in her first match back on tour in Dubai last month was understandable given the emotional relief of victory in Melbourne and she should be better for it across the Sunshine Double as she aims to go one better than her runner-up finish to Elena Rybakina here last season. World number 64 Peyton Stearns will be up for the scrap after an impressive straight-sets victory over Elisabetta Cocciaretto but she is currently some way off of the level that saw her reach the round of 16 at the US Open last summer. The 22-year-old will be backed to the hilt as the home underdog here but Sabalenka should bring her bullish best to the desert to win in two.
TIP: ARYNA SABALENKA TO WIN 2-0
