Jakub Mensik is set to make his second appearance for Team Europe at the Laver Cup, having made his debut in San Francisco last year. He competed in three matches overall, winning two points on the opening day of the event after beating Alex Michelsen in the singles and then partnering up with Carlos Alcaraz and winning another point in the doubles. He would also lose to Alex de Minaur. Mensik won a title in Auckland right at the start of the year, while he also advanced to his first Grand Slam semi-final at Roland Garros. His most recent tournament was at the US Open, with his campaign ending against Learner Tien in the third-round after a five set defeat.

His opponent is Brandon Nakashima, and the 26-year-old is appearing at the event for the first time. Nakashima enjoyed a thoroughly productive North American summer swing for the most part, as he advanced to his first Masters 1000 final at the Canadian Open, along with a semi-final appearance at the Washington Open. However, that did not result in a deep run at Flushing Meadows, following a loss to Alex Michelsen in round two.

They met for the first time in Washington this year, with Nakashima winning in three sets. This has the makings of another close battle.
