Rafael Jodar is set to appear at the Laver Cup for the first time with Team Europe. It has been a whirlwind season for the 20-year-old, who began the year outside the top 150, but consistent results over the course of the campaign have seen him move up to 14 in the world. This included his first tour-level title in Marrakech, another final at the Washington Open, and a maiden Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros.

The Spaniard faces Alexander Bublik, who is also making his debut at the event. Bublik’s season began promisingly as he won the Hong Kong Open, but he has struggled to make an impact at the big events this season, only advancing beyond the round-of-16 at a slam or Masters event on one occasion, and that was at the Monte-Carlo Masters in April.

This will be their first meeting, and the indoor conditions could help maximise the effectiveness of Bublik’s serve. However, Jodar has already developed into an excellent returner and has enough quality to create opportunities on a consistent basis.
