THE PREDICTION

World number nine Jessica Pegula dropped he first set of her second round clash with home hopeful Harriet Dart on Thursday before rallying well to win in three. The 28-year-old came into Wimbledon cold with no grass-court matches under her belt after reaching the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam for a third time at Roland-Garros, where she lost to Iga Swiatek in the latter stages of a tournament for the second time this season. The American has drawn Swiatek in her portion of the draw once again this campaign and she will be desperate to reach that target with a big chance at revenge on the Pole’s weakest surface but this is no gimme against an always-dangerous Petra Martic.

World number 80 Martic is far better than her current WTA ranking suggests and she is yet to drop a set this week at SW19 with two forceful wins over Shelby Rogers and Kristina Kucova. The 31-year-old has all the tools to excel on grass with a powerful, pinpoint serve and she leads Pegula 2-1 in their tour-level head-to-head after winning their two most recent meetings on clay at the2019 Charleston Open and last season’s Italian Open. Pegula is a better player than she was 12 months ago but treat this match with caution. Back the American to win at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners or consider taking at least a tiebreak here and avoiding the result altogether. There has been a tiebreak in both of Martic’s matches so far.
