THE PREDICTION

World number 74 Sorana Cirstea is yet to drop a set at the Miami Open in one of the most surprising runs of the last few seasons. The former number 21 is an excellent player on her day but straight-set results over Caroline Garcia, Karolina Muchova, Marketa Vondrousova and most fantastically Aryna Sabalenka make a mockery of her current ranking. The Romanian has been building strong form since the Dubai Masters in February but becoming only the third player to beat Sabalenka this season mis a serious step up in level that makes her look the slightest favourite here. World number 13 Petra Kvitova overcame Ekaterina Alexandrova in three sets on Thursday after their quarter-final was delayed by rain in Miami and that extra two days’ rest for Cirstea may be the deciding factor here. Kvitova leads their head-to-head record 6-4 after taking their most recent encounter in Cincinnati last summer but Cirstea claimed their two before that at the Australian Open in both 2021 and 2022.

Three sets seem likelier than two but Cirstea is yet to drop one in this remarkable campaign so back the Romanian to earn at least a set here and leave the victor up to chance.
