THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Petra Kvitova has quietly built up some impressive form this season and the former number two should be considered a dark horse in Miami after a superb run to the quarter-finals at Indian Wells. The 33-year-old conceded just three games to Linda Noskova on Friday and wins over Jelena Ostapenko and Jessica Pegula in the desert last time out suggest she is the reasonable favourite here. 26-year-old Donna Vekic is just one place away from matching her career-high WTA world ranking of 19th first set four years ago after a remarkable return to form over the last few months but she needed to come back from a set down to oust Madison Brengle on Friday. The 22nd seed won her fourth WTA title at the Monterrey Open earlier this month but she has struggled to match that intensity since. The Croat is clearly enjoying tennis again under new coach Pam Shriver but this is a really tough draw so early on in Miami. Kvitova has won their last two encounters, including at this stage of the Miami Open back in 2019, to take a 3-1 lead in their head-to-head record and backing the Czech to edge this outright seems a reasonable risk.
