19-year-old Arthur Fils will make his Shanghai Masters debut at a career-high ATP world ranking of 44th off the back of an excellent breakthrough season on tour. The Frenchman won his maiden ATP title on clay at the Lyon Open in May, and a run to the semi-finals of the Hamburg Open in July further cemented his prowess on the surface, but back-to-back semi-finals reached on hard courts in Marseille and Montpellier in February suggest he has a game for all surfaces. World number 101 Pavel Kotov takes a two-match losing streak into Shanghai but both were hard-fought three-setters against tough foes, particularly in Chengdu where he took the first from eventual champion Alexander Zverev. The Kazakh has won just one of his five matches since the start of the hardcourt swing but Fils has also struggled since the end of the clay to make this a tough call. Back the Frenchman to earn at least a set inside an accumulator or consider the three-set option as a one off.
