THE LOWDOWN

PABLO CARRENO BUSTA

19th seed Pablo Carreno Busta overcame tough opposition in Sebastian Korda on Friday, beating the rising star in four sets. The 30-year-old has reached the semi-finals of the US Open on two previous occasions, most recently in 2019, but he has matched his best showing in Melbourne by making the round of 16. Carreno Busta added two more titles to his career total of 6 last season with victories on clay at the Marbella Open and Hamburg Open.

MATTEO BERRETTINI

World number seven Matteo Berrettini was part of a fascinating five-set tussle with 18-year-old Carlos Alcaraz, taking the first two sets before being pegged back. His win via the deciding tiebreak is a good marker for that match-up as he counted on his huge serve and big game experience when it counted against the rising star. 25-year-old Berrettini reached a first Grand Slam final last summer in a four-set defeat to Novak Djokovic and he also made the semi-finals of the US Open back in 2019.

THE PREDICTION

This is a huge stage for a first meeting between Matteo Berrettini’s hammer serve and Pablo Carreno Busta’s hustle but the Italian is likely to find a way through. The 25-year-old’s eventual victory over Carlos Alcaraz is as good as a top 10 win, such is the prodigal Spaniard’s rise, and while PCB has every chance of finding a way through his loss to big-serving Denis Shapovalov at the ATP Cup is something to consider. Berrettini will be all the more confident too but he has yet to take a match I straight sets and opting for both players to win at least one here could be a nice way to avoid picking the result. The riskier move is for Berrettini to win and both players to win at least a set.
