THE LOWDOWN

PABLO ANDUJAR

World number 83 Pablo Andujar overcame the impressive Alex Molcan in four sets on Thursday, saving 14 of 18 break points against the Slovak. The 35-year-old set a career-high ATP world ranking of 32nd back in 2015 but he put in some career-best performances last season in wins over Roger Federer at the Geneva Open and Dominic Thiem at Roland-Garros on his favoured clay. The Spaniard has four ATP titles on the surface, the most recent coming in Marrakech in 2018.

ALEX DE MINAUR

World number 42 Alex de Minaur put in an assured performance in the second round on Thursday to beat in-form Kamil Majchrzak in straight sets. The 22-year-old enjoyed a first win on Rod Laver Arena and he should see more Australians flock to his cause as a home favourite they very much believe in. The former world number 15 looks set for a great year on tour after a difficult 2021 season despite winning two more titles, with a career-best win over Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup two weeks ago.

THE PREDICTION

Alex de Minaur is a different animal at home and the boisterous Melbourne crowd are likely to make this quite a tricky day for Pablo Andujar. On the clay this would be quite the tussle and perhaps on some of the less fashionable hardcourt tournaments across the tour the Spaniard could edge past a less motivated version of the young Aussie but De Minaur looks set for quite the campaign here. Take the fastest man on tour to win outright here, with straight sets a possibility but a risk. Andujar has never reached the round of 16 in Melbourne.
