THE LOWDOWN

ONS JABEUR

World number six Ons Jabeur came back from a set down to beat an inspired Bianca Andreescu on Saturday, passing her first significant test this campaign. The 28-year-old took the first set from Elena Rybakina in last summer’s final before a shock defeat and she went on to finish runner-up to Iga Swiatek at the US Open in her second Grand Slam final. Jabeur achieved one of her lifetime goals by becoming the first Arab player to qualify for the WTA Finals late last season but she is desperate to capitalise on her form thee last few years at the highest level.

PETRA KVITOVA

Two-time former champion Petra Kvitova survived a real scare against impressive qualifier Natalija Stevanovic on Saturday, coming through in straight sets. The 33-year-old claimed both of her Grand Slam titles here in 2011 and 2014 amidst a run of five-successive appearances in the last eight but she has failed to make the quarter-finals since. Kvitova has enjoyed an excellent season so far, claiming her 30th WTA title out of the blue at the Miami Open and more recently her 31st at the Berlin Open to bring some very strong form on grass into SW19.

THE PREDICTION

Former world number two Ons Jabeur would have been part of the title conversation had she not spent much of the last two months injured but the Tunisian has forced herself into the picture this week. Kvitova, also a former number two despite her illustrious success, was very much a part of the mix after results in Berlin but she survived an early scare in the first round and both players have an extra gear to find on this surface. Kvitova leads their head-to-head 4-1, including their first encounter in the first round here in 2019, but she leads 2-1 since the start of 2021 when Jabeur really began to flourish on tour. The Czech is at her best on grass, and as good as any player in these conditions when playing to her maximum ability, but Jabeur’s trick-laden game can frustrate anyone on her day. The crowd will struggle to pick a favourite between the popular former champion and Jabeur’s insatiable charisma but this feels like the sort of match that will be won by the player who drops the first set. The sensible call is probably taking Kvitova to earn at least a set but leave this tight call out of an accumulator.
