Sloane Stephens made a positive start to her campaign in Guadalajara with a straight sets win over Carole Monnet. The former US Open champion broke twice on her way to taking the opening set before being pushed much harder in the second, eventually holding her nerve in the tiebreak to win 6-4 7-6 (5) after an hour and 48 minutes. It was Stephens’ first win at the event after first-round exits on her two previous appearances.

Janice Tjen also progressed in straight sets, beating Darja Vidmanova. The fifth seed was tested throughout a tight opening set but took control after winning the tiebreak. Tjen struck 10 aces, won 86% of her first serve points and did not face a single break point. The Indonesian arrived in Guadalajara following a first-round US Open defeat to Mirra Andreeva.

Tjen is one match away from a first quarter-final of the season and she will limit the opportunities for Stephens if she continues to serve well.
